Dear Andrew, cris, Heidi, and John,

I'd like to move forward with implementing the process for developing the department's hiring priorities as laid out at last week's department meeting.  As you recall, what's involved is a series of meetings at several levels leading to what I hope can be a coherent, comprehensive, and collegially developed hiring proposal that integrates the needs of the entire department.  I'd like to have an initial version of this proposal ready for discussion at the October 10th department meeting and, following further discussion and tweaking as needed, a final version ready for approval at the November meeting.

In order to move through this process in a timely fashion, the first step—development of individual proposals by each of the several programs—would probably be needed by October 1st, thus requiring meetings by the creative writing, literature, and professional writing committees within the next couple of weeks.  Although the status of linguistics as a CAS program possibly complicates discussion of potential ENG hires in linguistics, I take it as given that John and the linguistics faculty have a stake in the departmental conversation, and that therefore the linguistics committee may wish to develop its own proposal.

Two points worth noting: (1) there's nothing to prevent these programmatic proposals from incorporating suggestions for cooperative hires with other programs; and (2) the dean has made clear that neither she nor central administration wants a shopping list—what's required is that a case be made for core needs to fulfill the department's teaching mission.

Assuming these programmatic proposals can be developed in time, I'd like to schedule a combined meeting of program directors and the advisory committee early enough to prepare a unified proposal for the October 10th department meeting, i.e., sometime during the week of October 1st, or no later than October 8th.

Let me know of any difficulties you see with this plan.
