Just an update on our plans to provide 16 dial-in ppp lines
for testing this summer.

The server is configured. We have our TACACS server up.
Telecom is preparing the dial-in number to bind to the modems.
The server is configured, but not tested (for obvious reasons).

We hope to offer this service sometime this Monday.

Some details on the service.

Modems: 16 U.S.Robotics 28.8Kbps V.32, V.42bis modems. We suggest you
configure your modem for highest link speed and V.42 error control
(LAPM) and compression. 8 databits, no parity.
Authentication: Via the Novell NDS. Your unique id at miami university
is your userid. Your password is whatever you have set it to.
If your password is not set, go to a microcenter, log in as you
and use user tools from windows or the setpass command from DOS
to change your password from the default first 8 digits of your
Miami Id as displayed your MU id card.
Software: At this point you are on your own. I will post Macintosh ppp
software (guest accessible) on server MUSERVER1 in zone
MCSSERVICES... volume MU1-Supoort... Mac Support... Network
Shortcut sometime next week. Windows 95 clients work out of the
box. LINUX shouldn't be a problem. Windows 3.11 softare to be
         determined. DOS software unknown.
Your Contribution: We would very much appreciate feedback in MU.MODEMS
on which modems work well, which ppp software you like to run
(or can't get to run, or is unreliable), techniques you find
         helpful, etc.
The Future: We expect to have 198 dial in modems on the Oxford Campus
and as many as 48 modems each on the Middletown and Hamilton
Campuses by the start of second semester. The configuration
that we go production with will probably be somewhat different
the the configuration you use here.
Weather forecast: We forecast occasional changes to this service as
we refine our projected Fall dial-in configuration. The
changes will be posted in MU.MODEMS, but probably not with
         a great deal of notice.
Service Notes: Access is authenticated and logged. Antisocial Hacking
from this service is covered under the policies published in
the MU Student Handbook. Abuse will be prosecuted. There is a
5 hour time limit on a connection to this service. Unfortunately
I suspect sessions will drop abruptly with out notification after
         300 continuous minutes of service.

MCIS hopes this service will be helpful to you and will provide the
university with feedback that will improve the utility and robustness
of the production service scheduled for fall.
