There were 31 Long-tailed ducks at Caesar Creek State Park this afternoon. Originally spotted by Shane Egleston, they were near the end of Harveysburg Road. There were 30 in one raft and a single male separated from these birds. The single bird stayed in the bay near Harveysburg Rd while the raft moved together covering over a half mile in the time we watched them, sometimes diving in unison.
A female Merlin was perched in a leafless tree next to Harveysburg Rd. near the parking area, and 4 Bald Eagles were seen at the same time - 1 adult and 3 immature.
Other birds on the water included
Hooded Merganser
Common Merganser - 1 female
Ruddy Duck
Mallard (a few in the water, hundreds in the air)
Gadwall
Bufflehead
Pied-billed Grebe
Horned Grebe
Common Loon
On the beach a single Dunlin foraged next to the icy shoreline.
