MAY 06, 2017 - SUMMIT METRO PARKS BIKE & HIKE TRAIL FROM RT. 303 NORTH TO
BOSTON MILLS RD. THEN C.V.N.P. TO PENINSULA.
HIKE: Bike & Hike Trail north from Rt. 303 to Boston Mills Rd. then take
old Akron-Peninsula Rd. south back to Peninsula.
TIME: 8:00am - 10:50am TEMP.: 43 ~ 44 COND.: Overcast, steady mist to
steady, cold drizzle; front coming slow from the north.
FT.MI.: 4.25 OBS.: Douglas W. & Michelle Vogus.

I. MAMMALS: 2 SPECIES.

   1. Eastern Chipmunk - 2
   2. White-tailed Deer - 2 (unknown)


II. BIRDS: 51 SPECIES, 140 TOTAL BIRDS.
(NOTE: m = male; f = female; ? = bird was seen but not sexed; * = bird was
heard calling but not sexed)

   1. Canada Goose - 10 (5 goslings)
   2. Mourning Dove - 1
   3. Red-shouldered Hawk - 1
   4. Red-headed Woodpecker - 1 (along old Akron-Peninsula Rd. just before
   the Spicy Lamb Farm)
   5. Red-bellied Woodpecker - 3 (*)
   6. Downy Woodpecker - 1 (?)
   7. Hairy Woodpecker - 1 (*)
   8. Northern Flicker - 3 (1f,2* - female using last year's Pileated
   Woodpecker nest hole)
   9. Pileated Woodpecker - 2 (1?,1*)
   10. Eastern Phoebe - 1
   11. Red-eyed Vireo - 1
   12. Blue Jay - 4
   13. American Crow - 4
   14. Northern Rough-winged Swallow - 1
   15. Black-capped Chickadee - 3
   16. Tufted Titmouse - 5
   17. White-breasted Nuthatch - 1 (*)
   18. House Wren - 5
   19. Carolina Wren - 1
   20. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - 1 (?)
   21. Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1 (m)
   22. Wood Thrush - 2
   23. American Robin - 5
   24. Gray Catbird - 5
   25. Brown Thrasher - 1 (along hedgerow/field across from Camp Ledgewood
   on old Akron-Peninsula Rd.)
   26. European Starling - 2
   27. House Sparrow - 4
   28. Purple Finch - 7 (f - all in two Scotch pines along south side old
   Akron-Peninsula Rd. before last two houses on left - not a male to be
   found!)
   29. American Goldfinch - 7 (2m,1f,3?,1*)
   30. Ovenbird - 5 (2 along Bike & Hike Trail and 3 along old
   Akron-Peninsula Rd.)
   31. Louisiana Waterthrush - 1
   32. Northern Waterthrush - 1
   33. Blue-winged Warbler - 1 (m)
   34. Black-and-white Warbler - 1 (m)
   35. Common Yellowthroat - 1 (m)
   36. Yellow Warbler - 1 (m)
   37. Yellow-rumped Warbler - 5 (3m,2f)
   38. Black-throated Green Warbler - 1 (m - decent warblers considering
   the weather, but one young oak had all 5 yellow-rumped's, the b&w warbler,
   and the btg warbler - behold the power of the oak!)
   39. Eastern Towhee - 5 (3m,2*)
   40. Chipping Sparrow - 4
   41. Field Sparrow - 1
   42. Song Sparrow - 5
   43. White-throated Sparrow - 4
   44. White-crowned Sparrow - 1 (possibly more? Singing at the Spicy Lamb
   Farm)
   45. Dark-eyed Junco - 1 (m - at Boston Ledges feeding on the rock faces
   and ferns - migrating or staying?)
   46. Northern Cardinal - 4 (m)
   47. Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 1 (m)
   48. Red-winged Blackbird - 5 (3m,2f)
   49. Common Grackle - 1
   50. Brown-headed Cowbird - 4 (3m,1f)
   51. Baltimore Oriole - 3 (m)


III. AMPHIBIANS: 1 SPECIES, 1 TOTAL.

   1. Red Eft (terrestrial form of the Red-spotted Newt) - 1 (crossing old
   Akron-Peninsula Rd. and ushered off the pavement before an oncoming jogger
   could end it!)
