Greetings -
Around noon today (Sunday the 30th), I. Krise, The Kasouffs, and the Kraus's and I met up at Sim's Park in Euclid to scan the lake for signs of any waterbird movement. Bonaparte's Gulls were in good numbers (300+) and some were moving back and forth from west to east. Red-breasted Mergansers (120) were building offshore, and Horned Grebes (115) and Common Loons (60) were in good show. A single nearly-in-alternate-plumage RED-NECKED GREBE was observed well just offshore, and later on it moved off to the northeast. A small troop of Ruddy Ducks and some local-mixed-with-migrant Canada Geese were the only other waterfowl.
This week's forecast for waterbird movements on the lake is low to mild, with south winds in the 5 day forecast. No major movements of birds until the next NNW-based weather fronts hit us...hopefully soon as we enter in November - the single best lakewatch month of the year, with flocks of 300,000+ Red-breasted Mergansers recorded (NE Ohio) in mid- to late November, and fantastic chance for rarities.
