Some interesting remarks about new numbers of common ravens in New
York...http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 . Peterjohn treats this
on pp 343-44 in "The Birds of Ohio," remarking that "Common Ravens were
probably the most numerous corvid (jays, magpies, crows) in Ohio when
the state was first settled." The NY observer was intrigued:
"The numbers of ravens coming in to these sites is astonishing--hundreds
at a time on occasion. So many that they can strip a full grown deer
carcass to the bones in a day. " Another observer on the NY list
pointed out that "The winter courtship is well underway and nesting will
start soon." Ravens used to flourish across Ohio, but as
their numbers diminished they held on mostly in the NE part of the
state; they might begin to be seen there more often if their range is
re-occupied.
