*DECEMBER 07, 2018 - CUYAHOGA VALLEY MONTHLY TOWPATH TRAIL CENSUS.*
*HIKE*: Red Lock Trailhead south to Merriman Valley.  *TIME*: 7:30am -
4:25pm  *TEMP.*: 28 ~ 32
*COND.*: Cloudy with steady flurries until 11:30am; then partly sunny with
blue skies until 1:30pm, then mostly cloudy;
Brandywine Pond and Dover Pond ice-free, Ira Beaver Marsh covered with
skim-ice with only one small open area.
*TRAIL COND.*: About a half-inch of fresh snow at start, melting away and
thawing, making trail wet and sloppy heading south.
*RIVER COND.*: Slightly above normal.  OBS.: John Henry and Douglas W.
Vogus.

*I. MAMMALS*: 5 SPECIES.

   1. Eastern Cottontail - 1
   2. Eastern Fox Squirrel - 4
   3. Red Squirrel - 18
   4. American Beaver - 1
   5. White-tailed Deer - 10 (bucks: 10-pt,8-pt,6pt,4pt; does: 6)


*II. BIRDS*: 42 SPECIES, 748 TOTAL BIRDS.
(NOTE: m = male; f = female; ? = bird was seen but not sexed; * = bird was
heard calling but not sexed)

   2. American Black Duck - 6 (3m,2f,1?)
   3. Mallard - 8 (5m,3f)
   4. Common Merganser - 9 (6m,3f)
   5. Rock Pigeon - 10

   9. Bald Eagle - 5 (4 adult,1 immature)  (Tied Census High from 03/2015 &
   01/2016)
   10. Cooper's Hawk - 1 (immature f)
   11. Red-tailed Hawk - 9 (1 immature)
   12. Eastern Screech-Owl - 1 (red morph)
   13. Belted Kingfisher - 4 (2m,1?,1*)
   14. Red-bellied Woodpecker - 18 (6m,4f,1?,7*)
   15. Downy Woodpecker - 21 (8m,6f,2?,5*)
   16. Hairy Woodpecker - 10 (3m,3f,4*)
   17. Pileated Woodpecker - 3 (*)
   18. American Kestrel - 1 (m)  (First December Record on Census)

   27. Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1 (f)  (being chased by the Golden-crowned
   Kinglet - First December Record on Census)
   28. Eastern Bluebird - 67 (28m,21f,18?)  (New Census High - previous was
   63 on 11/2017)
   29. American Robin - 5
   30. European Starling - 62
   31. Cedar Waxwing - 11
   32. House Sparrow - 11
   33. House Finch - 2 (1?,1*)
   34. American Goldfinch - 23
   35. American Tree Sparrow - 9
   36. Song Sparrow - 23
   37. Swamp Sparrow - 6
   38. White-throated Sparrow - 10
