A lone Great Egret was at the Newell's Run wetlands adjacent to the Ohio
River upstream from Matietta this morning. Certainly unusual for this time
of year. Likely a dispersing juvenile.
Interestingly, the bird was not completely white; it had a small light
brown/tannish patch behind the eyes on both sides of the head.
16 Cliff Swallows are still gathering mud from the extensive mudflats for
nest maintenance.
Also of note:
7 Wood Ducks floundering around in the mud.
2 Great Blue Herons
2 Green Herons
1 Osprey. Later 1 was seen perched on the power line tower across from the
Haessly lumber yard about 3 miles south. No sign of a bird in the nest on
that tower.
1 Belted Kingfisher
17 Northern Rough-winged Swallows, including many fledglings.
