I stopped by these 2 MetroParks south of Groveport, mostly to check out their wetlands and field areas. Walnut Woods has opened the Monarch Trail, a bikepath that winds by some of their new Big Run wetlands. The pools looked pretty high & overgrown, but could be good shorebird habitat if they can dry down somewhat. Slate Run Wetlands were mixed, with some full and others drying, but only Kildeer seemed to have discovered them. Highlights of the morning included:
Green Herons - at least 2 were calling from drying pools at Slate Run
Shorebirds - nothing but Kildeer, but they were fairly common in the drying pools at Slate Run
N.Bobwhite - one of the introduced quail was calling around the Slate Run wetlands
Yellow-billed Cuckoos - at least 2 were singing along the Tall Pines loop at Walnut Woods
E.Kingbirds - family groups were at both wetlands areas
Vireos - Red-eyed & White-eyed were at the Tall Pines area of Walnut Woods
Swallows - Walnut Woods had small groups of Barn, Rough-winged & Tree, while the Slate Run wetlands had all the common species, including 6 Purple Martins, 1 Cliff, and 8-10 Banks.
Brown Thrashers - at least 2 were around the shrubby edges of the Tall Pines area at Walnut Woods
Common Yellowthroats - truly common, with 16+ at Walnut Woods and another 10+ at Slate Run wetlands
Grasshopper Sparrows - at least 2 were singing in the grasslands around the Big Run wetlands at Walnut Woods
Baltimore Orioles - females were leading juveniles at both wetlands
