I stopped at several spots along the central & southern shore of Hoover
Reservoir this afternoon.  The chilly temps have kept the northern part
iced up, but a large hole has appeared from the County Line Bridge north to
Maxtown, and a huge one covers the area just above the dam.  Most of the
waterfowl and gulls were now in these holes above the dam, but there were
still a few things down in the spillway below the dam.  Notables for the
afternoon included:

Mute Swan - 1 was in the Maxtown hole
Geese - lots of Canadas in the Maxtown-CountyLine hole, fewer south of there
Dabblers - Mallards were the most common waterfowl (300-400), but also had
small groups of Black Ducks in several spots, plus 2 Pintail (CountyLine)
and 4 Gadwall (dam spillway)
ComGoldeneye - 3 were in the furthest north parts of the Maxtown hole
ComMergansers - 32+, with most of these just north of the CountyLine bridge
Red-br.Mergansers - 2 with Commons off Walnut St Boat launch
Hooded Mergansers - 35+ just above the dam
Gulls - big flock of 300 on the ice off Walnut St ramp, almost all
Ring-bills.  Small numbers at other spots, along with a few Herring Gulls

Land birds were surprisingly scant; I found only a single sparrow in all
the stops, although there were a few woodpeckers and parids to be seen.  Of
note was an adult Red-shouldered Hawk at Mudhen Marsh.
