A nice morning along the Scioto River in Columbus didn't necessarily equate
to good birding. I stopped at Haul Rd ponds, Scioto Audubon, Downtown
waterfront, Confluence Park, Marble Cliff, and Griggs Dam, and found only a
smattering of late migrants and no migrant waterfowl. The river was very
high, so looking for waterbirds was a chore. Notables included:
cormorants - the one waterbird that was ubiquitous, a few were everywhere
Mute Swan - 2 were in the Haul Rd ponds
Pied-billed Grebe - singles were at Haul Rd and at Scioto Audubon
Turkey Vultures - 10 were still lingering around Griggs Dam
Blue Jays - after so many yesterday, today had a paltry few
Kinglets - Golden-crowns were at many locations, but also had Ruby-crowns
at Downtown and at Griggs
CedarWaxwings - small #s were at Scioto Audubon and at Griggs
Sparrows - small #s of Songs and White-throats were at most stops, but the
Downtown riverfront also had a few White-crowns and a Field Sparrow, Scioto
Audubon had several Chipping, and Haul Rd had a Swamp.
Blackbirds - hardly any, with just a few Redwings early
