Birding in the rain isn't so bad.  And you can help nature: the mosquitoes loved coming under the umbrella to get out of the rain. If you decide you don't want to share your umbrella with our flying buddies, you can lift and lower the umbrella repeatedly and quickly, creating a draft which the little guys resent.  Of course, you tend to get a little wet when you do this. 
The pet trail was active; birding from the nature center porch was fruitful,  birding the snakeroot plants from the blinds was very good, and no umbrella to hold.

eastern phoebes
Hummingbird
Belted kingfisher
Solitary sandpiper

Fox squirrel almost ran over my shoe as I entered the east blind and he was exiting.
