Subject: Record Number of Bobolinks at Byers Woods in Ashland County

Come bird with us:
The Bobolink habitat will be celebrated at Byers Wood at an ALL FREE EVENT
Sat. June 22nd, 9:00 am-1:00 pm

What’s black, white, yellow and heard all over the grasslands at Byers
Woods?
Bobolinks.

The Bobolinks have once again returned to Ashland County from their
wintering grounds in Argentina.  After five years of conservation we have a
record number of birds nesting on this man-made grassland. Come visit these
charismatic grassland birds at an outdoor festival named in their honor.
Ashland County Park District and the Greater Mohican Audubon Society
continue to protect and promote the regionally endangered Bobolinks at Byer
Woods, a popular park surrounding a capped off landfill at 671 County Road
1754 Ashland, OH 44805.

Jim McCormac Ohio Div. of Wildlife Avian Specialist and columnist for the
Columbus Dispatch and Lisa Rainsong of the Cleveland Institute of Music
will also offer guided walks specializing in bird song.

A Beginners Bird walk offered by local favorite Tim Leslie of Ashland Park
District, spotting scopes manned by celebrity birder Greg Miller (The Big
Year) and Su Snyder, vendor booths, food sales and native plant sales are
all a part of this popular event. Black Swamp Bird Observatory will also be
lending their support to the conservation of Bobolinks. Young people are
especially encouraged to come out to learn more about Ohio Young Birders and
the J-Nats from Ohio Bird Sanctuary; Jan Ferrell will have birds on display.
The Ohio Ornithological Society and Black Swamp Bird Observatory will have
promotional displays on hand.

We have you covered from- bluebirds to bats- come out and meet our local
experts Don and Dianna Plant. There will also be a complete a selection of
local native plants for sale. Enhance your landscape with native plants to
increase the biodiversity of your home habitat.  Ashland County Park
District will provide food service and “Crafts for Kids.” will also be
offered by park volunteer Kolleen Crall.

If you are interested in extending your weekend and learning more about
grassland birds, join us for a Bobolink Benefit event featuring Michael
Godfrey on Friday night. More details can be found at www.gmasohio.org
