Hi,

Driving south our of Painesville I had an adult Golden Eagle soaring at
the intersection of Liberty/Ravenna andSR 84 about 1030 this morning.

Seeing this bird circling in the distance my first assumption was Bald
Eagle or Kregal. But as I got closer and then stopped at the traffic light
I could see it was neither. The head proportion dihedral and manner of
flight confirmed this as a Golden Eagle. Since there was no white band in
the tail an adult.

Telling big dark birds apart is not that difficult if you have had a chance
over time to compare. The Detroit River Hawk watch provides the
opportunity to do that every fall as they get good numbers of Golden Eagles
every year.

A Bald Eagle has a proportionally larger head in relation to the tail and
holds its wings board flat. Kregal has a very small head, and holds it's
wings in the distinctive deep dihedral. It also rocks in flight . Golden
Eagle has a proportionally smaller head than a Bald Eagle, holds its wings
in a slight but noticeable dihedral and has rock steady flight even when it
is windy.

Winter is always the best time to find Golden Eagles in NE Ohio. Especially
after a warm spell. I speculate they wander north until they hit the lake
then move back south.

Haans
