The reserve has been fairly quiet the last couple days but I had a couple good birds today including another first for the reserve: Great Horned Owl. Amidst the cacophony of mobbing jays and crows in the distance, I could hear the hooting of a GHO a few times. The commotion was from across the reserve from where I was so no chance of seeing the owl but v cool to hear.

I always figured there must be GHOs at the reserve but I’ve never heard or seen them. I see/hear Barred Owls from time to time there but haven’t happened on a GHO before today. Now if I can just find a screech-owl that must be there as well! I’ve only heard screech near my house once or twice.

I was also happy to see a soaring adult Broad-winged Hawk today. I think I’ve only seen Broad-wingeds a couple times at the reserve. It was soaring not far from one Black Vulture plus TVs.

A Ruby-throated HB male seems to have set up a territory close to where I’ve seen them regularly in the past. It’s been perched in the same tree the last couple visits in the same area I usually see and/or hear a chat.

Only warblers were nesters: Am Redstart, Yellow, Com YT, La WT, KY, N Parula. I had good looks at KY & female/yellow Redstart.

Swainson’s & Wood Thrushes, bluebirds.

FCs: Acadian, peewee, E Phoebe. Heard Great-crested yesterday but not today oddly. Heard Willow at the Land Lab yesterday.

Scarlet Tanager—chick-burrs in a few places
Indigo Bunting
BG Gnatcatcher
White-eyed & Red-eyed Vireos
Chimney Swifts—6 were chittering above the field station
Barn & Tree Swallows

Near home, a bluebird pair near the bike path already have a fledging which I saw last night. 2 Red-headed WPs were mixing it up near my backyard yesterday. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, male & female, visit my feeders.
