When I stepped outside yesterday morning, a Virginia Rail was "grunting" in
my yard. It called numerous times, was silent for about a minute, then
called once more. The calls were rather loud, so it must have been fairly
close to the house. Unfortunately, I had to leave for an appointment so I
couldn't look for it. This is the first time I've had one on my property. A
flock of 12 Purple Martins were flying about shortly afterward. I watched
one of them flutter above and then feed another that was perched on a dead
branch. A nice way to start the day.
