Here in Fairlawn, Summit County, I spotted 12 b-h cowbirds among a flock of around 90 starlings feeding on the newly cleared lawn of a local golf course. Binoculars were needed to tell them apart; I distinctly saw the brown heads of the males and the tan color of the females, in contrast to the starlings. While the starlings spread out over a wide area of grass, the cowbirds stayed in a compact group on a section of blacktop pathway. I wonder why.
A few days ago, I was thrilled to record 20 species in one day. This morning, on my 3-hour stroll around the golf course, I found 24: all the usual winter birds except goldfinch, plus bluebirds, grackles, one redwing, and those 12 cowbirds.
