Greetings! At 5:00 p.m. this evening (01/10/15) at Butler Springs (SR 83 north of Holmesville, OH at the SE corner of the Killbuck Marsh Complex) a Pectoral Sandpiper was seen along with American Pipit - 1, Killdeer - 2 and Wilson's Snipe - 2. All birds at Butler Springs were still present at dusk. The birds stood on the edge of the ice and also foraged in the shallow water, in an area near the edge of the ice, that is choked with water cress. The Pectoral Sandpiper also, at times, stood in the watercress with the Killdeer, Wilson's Snipe and American Pipit.  For those not familiar with the area, Butler Springs is an year-round, open spring within (at the edge of) the Killbuck Marsh complex. It is located just north of the village of Holmesville, on SR 83, at the very southeastern edge of the Killbuck Wildlife Area Complex. Butler Springs never freezes and remains a shallow, open area that attracts waterfowl, shorebirds and pipits during extremely cold temperatures. The spring originates in the hillside, on the east side of SR 83, runs under the road and opens in the marsh complex. The open water area of the spring, just west of the road edge is very shallow and is filled with watercress (Nasturtium officinale W.T. Aiton). The birds often sit/rest/forage (on/in) the water cress, in the shallow water. There are places to pull off on both the east and west sides of the road, near the spring. It's a great place to check for January birding! P.S. American Pipit - #98, Wilson's Snipe - #99 and Pectoral Sandpiper - #100 [Ohio January 100 Birds!] Good Birding! Jason Jason S. Larson
