I thought that might get your attention -
I'm not about to try to ruffle any feathers between hunters and non-hunters nor do I want to be on the undercard of today's "tape players vs. non-tape players" smackdown, but I was perusing O.D.N.R.'s website in regards to hunting regulations for rails and moorhens and was wondering if anyone knows anyone who actually hunts these and/or why? I believe the rails are limited to Sora and Virginia, which are quite common in the right habitat, and find it interesting that we never hear from a hunter who mistakenly shot a black or yellow rail while out in the marsh hunting for sora or Virginia's or ended up with an unusually bright moorhen which turned out to be a purple gallinule. Much like the occasional duck hunter who comes up with a female eider in some un-eider-like location. Like I said, I have nothing against hunter's, I've hunted before, know quite a lot of hunter's, and we both agree that both parties (birder's and hunter's) have
protected enough land with our money to make a fat-cat developer hurl into his top-shelf martini. None of the hunter's I know know anyone who has hunted rail, maybe gone on an occasional "snipe hunt", but no rail.
I also find it interesting that O.D.N.R.'s website has all sorts of tasty recipes for dove, deer, duck, pheasant, woodcock, etc., but no "Saute' de Sora" or "Virginia Rack of Rail". And how many sora's does it take to feed a family of four? I also find it interesting that whoever hunts these birds does not have to purchase a Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp or a Conservation Stamp. It's Monday and I could use some clarification.
