Hi,

Yesterday on the Geauga County Wildlife Facebook page, there were a series
of photos with a request for ID help. The bird in question was a sub-adult
Northern Goshawk. The photos are the best I have ever seen of a Goshawk in
the Cleveland Region.

Given the large tracts of forest in Lake, and Geauga Counties, Goshawks
while still rare, do show up here. They are a bird of deep woods habitat
that is seldom visited by those interested in listing. Goshawks are well
documented nesters on the Allegheny Plateau of northwestern Pennsylvania
and that geography extends into Ohio. So their occurence here in
appropriate habitat is not unexpected.

This particular bird was found in Burton and along the upper Cuyahoga river
which runs south through that area.

Haans
