The Ohio Bird Records Committee (OBRC) has recently received documentation of an adult Mississippi Kite. It was first seen this past weekend for an extended period of time, soaring and feeding above the Top Of The Caves Campground, by Rhonda Robinson. Several of her very good diagnostic photos have also been submitted. From just east of Ash Cave on SR 56, take SR 374 north for about 2 miles to Chapel Ridge Road. Turn left (west), and in less than a mile the campgrounds will be on your left. For best viewing, drive past the campgrounds to the old Wesley Church and cemetery. Park here and scan the skies, especially above the wooded area to the SE of the campgrounds and pond. Yesterday, we re-found and had good binocular and scope looks of this bird. Another excellent viewing area was from near the top of the Ash Cave Lookout Tower; located a short distance from the parking area at the corner of SR 374 and Cedar Ridge Road. Looking out over the treetops, the mowed grass of the campgrounds can be seen in the distance. It's also very likely that this is a MIKI nesting situation, which could be confirmed later by continued monitoring of this area for juvenile birds in flight. Also noteworthy was a Red-breasted Nuthatch; both seen and heard from along the wooded trail just a short distance beyond the lookout tower.
