For the last 3 days there has been a flock of Great Egrets in South
Columbus. They are located in a transient wet land south of the Lowes
parking lot at the junction of I270 and South High street. You can access
the area by driving south off the lowes parking lot on the dirt road that
will take you to the ridge overlooking this wet land area. There were:
Great Egrets 13 Great Blue Herons 5 Kildeer 1 Mallards 8 with at least 10
ducklings Canadas 8 Starlings , cowbirds and assorted common species I did
not have much time to look for other shorebirds but I think that if you
went back in the morning there would be other species. I was suprised as
this is an urban area that abuts the quarry area that runs south to north
just east of the river. This was the largest concentration of Egrets I
have seen in cental Ohio.
Good birding, Phillip North
