When the drizzle stopped late this afternoon, I headed south to Dawes
Arboretum. Although I did stop at the feeder station and drive around the
driving loop, my best birds were along White Chapel Road and Licking Trail,
which both border the new wetlands. I needed my scope to see the waterfowl,
and still couldn't see all of them in the tall grasses. Highlights:
Wood ducks - XX (I stopped counting when I got to 50.)
Mallards - several
American black ducks - about 10
Northern pintail - 1 male
Many unidentifiable ducks in the weeds and grass, but I believe most of them
were mallards or black ducks.
Eastern meadowlark
Cooper's hawk
Kestrels - 3 different birds
Red-tailed hawks - 5 different birds
Northern flicker - I've been having trouble spotting one of these, so was
glad to see one.
My county total for March is now 58.
