While running my Cowan Lake route, I discovered a Bald Eagle sitting on the
ice.  It appeared to be molting in fourth year plumage.  In recent years,
Cowan has regularly had a single Bald Eagle in late winter.  They rarely
stay longer than a day.

The lake is still about 90% iced over, but in the small amount of open
water, the ducks and geese are beginning to congregate,  In addition to
Canada Geese and Mallards, I had small numbers of Lesser Scaup and Northern
Pintails and four Common Goldeneye.

If you plan to visit Cowan Lake in the next few days, be advised that not
all the roads have been cleared.  Four-wheel drive is necessary to get to
the fishing pier and I haven't even attempted to get down to the beach.
 Actually, getting down to the beach would not be the problem.  The trick
would be getting back up the hill.
