A Hairy woodpecker question follows...
We live in suburban Akron and have several year-long resident bird species
in our yard (several large maples plus a birch. neighbors have oaks, a few
pines): downy and red-bellied woodpeckers, chickadee, titmouse, white
breasted nuthatch, mourning dove, cardinal, blue jay, Carolina wren, house
finch, house sparrow, goldfinch, etc. Feeders help.
The Downies are around daily, the Red-bellieds quite regularly, all year.
but we would go years without a single visit by a Hairy. last year we had
a handful of one-day visits. now, this year, since August, we have
semi-regular visits to the suet feeder of a female Hairy. one day we had 2
females. never a male. I wonder if this female might attract a male and
stay around for the winter, and even to nest. Have others observed "new"
local residents after years without? Do you think we can get a resident
pair of Hairy Woodpeckers?
