This bird looks like a pretty typical juv. Semipalmated Sandpiper and to my eye there is definitely webbing between the toes. The legs also have a slight greenish cast, which is often the case with young Semis. This bird shows no bright rufous margins on the scapulars or the tertials, which should be the case with either a juv. Red-necked or juv. Little Stint in August. Based on the clean plumage and lack of any apparent molt, we can be certain that this bird is juvenile.

Subject: [Ohio-birds] Conneaut- Possible Stint Pics From This MORNING
To: [log in to unmask]
Date: Friday, August 21, 2009, 4:15 AM

Hi,

I was at Conneaut from ~9-12 this morning and at
one point someone thought they saw the stint.  Much excitement ensued with lots of people looking at lots of peeps.  I saw one bird that appeared to match field marks mentioned previously and lacked webbing on the feet.  I know that Rob Lowry also felt this bird did not have webbing.  The problem was there were several bright juvi. semipalms mixed in with the peeps and I think not everyone was looking at the same bird when they proclaimed they all had webbing.  After looking at a few pics I shot, I think the bird I photographed MAY have been the stint.  Please take a look at the pics and let me know what you think.  I'm sure a lot of the morning birders would like to add it to their Ohio lists!

I posted the best pic here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=32395&id=1396450923&saved#/album.php?aid=32395&id=1396450923
I have a few other shots but they are rather blurry (still getting used to digiscoping).  Anyone else get pics of the bird this morning?

Take care,
Heather
