Hi All:  Just received a phone call from an Amish friend of mine, Junior Nisley, of nearby rural Loudonville.  He and his family have played host to a second-year female Rufous Hummingbird, since October.  Alan Chartier, from Michigan, had identified and banded the bird.  Sadly, Junior just reported to me that it had succumbed to the minus 6 degree temperature Wednesday morning.  He asked me to report this on the Ohio List Serve.  Needless to say, after enjoying this little bird for over 2 months, the family was very sad about this occurrence.  I certainly knew their feelings, when I had a Rufous at our residence several years ago.  Tragically, in our case, our neighbor's cat captured him on January 11th of that year.  I suppose some will argue that we should not encourage them to stay.  And there is some validity in that argument.   Is there some validity in the argument of feeding mice to Snowy Owls?  How many of us are feeding winter birds?  Just a thought.
