I saw sharp shinned hawk perched above a feeder in my yard today.
(I think an adult male. Seemed on the large side.)
I mention this mainly because he was calling. I’ve never heard a sharpie
or a coopers calling like this. It wasn’t the “alarm call” series of high notes.
Just a single note, repeated every few seconds or so. Actually, before
I saw the hawk I heard the call and thought it was a blue jay making a half
hearted attempt at a hawk call.
There were birds in the shrubs and at the feeder below him, apparently
untroubled by his presence. He sat, he preened, and after half an hour or
so he went off on his rounds. I looked around for feathers but didn’t see any
evidence that he’d killed and eaten a bird there.
