Before I made the mad dash to Oxbow to see the Sabine’s Gull this afternoon, I birded a birdless Denison then decided to check out Dutch Fork Wetlands in search of sparrow habitat. Not much there either but picked up a couple Swamp Sparrows.
The Sabine’s gave great scope views from the wooded point off the oxbow parking lot & decent record photos. It never came very close unfortunately & the intermittent rain/wind squalls made for chilly viewing but it was well worth the trip. Ohio bird #310! I was also amazed to discover from my database that I hadn’t seen this bird for nearly 20 years! Such a striking bird in flight—beautiful gull. Never saw the Franklin’s Gull that was reported—just some Yellow-rumped Warblers, a drake Wood Duck & I heard a Kingfisher. Lots of Great Egrets around & a couple Great Blues. Lots of DC Cormorants. Bonaparte’s, Herring & RB Gulls.
