Fellow birders,

To the five or six of you who occasionally wander into Perry county, possibly on purpose, here is some news on short eared owls as well as harriers. Visited the old reliable site at Rehoboth reclaimed area just north of new Lexington. Found an astonishing 22 northern harriers. Actually got an accidental photo of 19 at once. Then found three short eared owls. Later found two more. Heard the owls “barking” quite a bit and lots of harrier “chatter”.
Last week, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday we visited a site north of somerset off 757 between somerset and glenford. It is well marked on ebird reports. There we found owls each visit, eight on Friday!, easily viewable and also harriers. Quite a nice spot. Decent photos obtained. I believe it is an old central silica site that has been restored to possibly 100 acres of grassland.
In conclusion, Perry county now has at least two reliable sites for short eared owls. We will continue to look for more. May take hunting season off.
