Wanting a change of scenery & hoping for cooler temps, I headed North. Magee is still closed at the turnoff but Ottawa, Metzger, Howard Marsh as well as Maumee SP were open.

At Maumee, access to the boardwalk trail is closed at the nature center which is also closed. However, if you walk down by the lodge, u can access the boardwalk there. I believe I was the only one who had a mask to wear. Luckily, not v many people were on the boardwalk but it’s still close quarters when u do meet someone so I recommend u have one with u. Social distancing at the other spots wasn’t a problem.

Birding gen quiet but I got some good birds at Howard Marsh In the afternoon. Best was a Least Bittern in flight on both sides of the road near the Madewell bridge. It flew a couple times, did not vocalize, diving into the reeds & disappearing between flights.

Almost tripped over the Whimbrel. It showed well in the area by the main sign in the parking lot.

Heard Marsh Wren there also. Osprey on platform. Brief look at imm BC Night-heron. Spotted SPs & Killdeer. Pied-billed Grebes, coots.

At Ottawa, Trumpeters weren’t close but I had a pair with 3 large silver gray cygnets. An ad Bald Eagle flew over which seemed to upset the adults who flew off trumpeting, leaving their cygnets behind who moved into a weedy area near the shore. Several Great Egrets, a few Great Blues. Caspian & Forster’s Terns. Heard Com Gallinule.

Adult purple Martins Feeding youngsters. Swallows: Barn, Rough-winged & Tree.

E Phoebe & Cedar Waxwings (Maumee); indigo bunting (Ottawa). Only warblers, Yellow & Com YT.
