After I had logged about 900 historical lists, I realized that some of my rarities were not showing up on my list. I had to go back and look for "+ taxa" and correct for rare species that I had entered under "other warbler," "other passerine," etc.

Maybe there should be a prominent note about this in eBird?

Subject: [Ohio-birds] eBird RARITIES and how to find them on your checklist

Today I saw an eBird Checklist in Geauga County that listed "2 Snow Geese,
but they were actually Greater White-fronted Geese because they don't show
up on the checklist".

If your species doesn't show up, it's probably a RARITY (as the Greater
White-fronted Geese are in Geauga) so you need to look on the right side of
the screen (assuming you are using your computer for this checklist) and
click the little box next to SHOW RARITIES and your geese will magically
appear on the checklist. It will also prompt you, before submitting the
list, to be sure of your entry and to provide written or photo evidence.

We are always happy to see new eBird users. Please don't hesitate to
'reach-out' to the Listserv if you have questions. The more you use it the
easier it gets!

If you are still with me, there will be an eBird program on February 18 at
The West Woods Nature Center in Geauga County. Linda Gilbert and I will
log-in to eBird and demonstrate how to get started, how to search for
useful information, and how to do advanced searches. You will get a handout
so you can do it all yourself at home and you can ask any questions! We
will even have our local REVIEWER there to field the tough stuff. A
reminder will go on the Listserv later in January to 'save the date'.

Happy New Year,

Matt Valencic
