Hi all,

We went for a walk in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland Heights this
afternoon. Honestly, the place has not been that “birdy” for us the last
couple of winters, but hope springs eternal…

We had uncountable flocks of American Robins, dozens of Dark-eyed Juncos,
perhaps a dozen Blue Jays, and two Red-bellied Woodpeckers. Just a couple
of pairs of Canada Goose, and surprisingly, not a single duck on the pond,
which was entirely open.

But then, as we were leaving (for those who know the place, in the trees
just northeast of the Garden Crypts, just before entering the open meadow
that leads to Mayfield Cemetery), I heard a familiar sort of rattling call
we hadn’t heard for some time, and there was a Red-headed Woodpecker.

We used to see them very regularly in spring and summer at nearby Forest
Hill Park, but that was years ago—this was the first one we’ve seen around
here in quite some time.

Best wishes,

Steve Cagan

Cuyahoga County
