While I didn’t get great looks at the Red Crossbills this morning given the dawn light & the fact they stayed near the tops of the pines, it was still great to add another OH bird. I’ve seen Red Crossbills better out west but definitely a cool Ohio bird.

Also amazing this morning was 15-20! Pine Warblers bopping around in the same pine trees as the crossbills—some were even singing. I’ve never seen that many Pine Warblers at once and for that matter, any other warbler save the hordes of Yellow-rumpeds in Cape May in the fall. I saw v bright males as well as dull females. It’s a challenge in the dawn light to sort yellow Pine Warblers from female & 1st year male Red Crossbills at the v top of the pines…fortunately, the crossbills are bigger/heavier-bodied.

After the crossbills flew off & hadn’t returned in about half an hour, and noting that the weekend hikers/crowds were arriving, I headed to Clear Creek MP swinging by Logan Lake to check the beach but only saw a couple killdeer there.

Clear Creek was v quiet but it was still a beautiful morning to be out in the woods. Saw one female Redstart. Heard Acadian FC & Swainson’s Thrush; Blue-headed, Yellow-throated Vireos w/brief looks at a Red-eyed. Great looks at a Pileated WP low on a trunk in the sun.
