First, I never have thought about buying a hunting license to contribute to conservation for birding habitat, and I think that’s a good idea and worth considering. Also as somebody pointed out you can contribute to ODNR division of natural areas and preserves via the check off program but you can also just send a check to them, address is on their website. And there are other organizations like Ohio Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, Alliance for the Great Lakes, Appalachian Ohio Alliance, Edge of Appalachia Preserve, and many others in addition to the obvious ones like Audubon.

Regarding birds, I had one Fox Sparrow scratching around underneath my feeders on Sunday and two yesterday. Those were first appearances in my yard that I’m aware of.
