The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE first discovered on the Adams County CBC in mid December and relocated by Ned Keller on Dec. 28 remains near West Union.  There is no actual address here, but plugging 1000 Malone Rd, West Union into your GPS will get you close.

The bird is usually found perched on the wires over/around/behind an abandoned house and the manure pile in a cow pasture, but today, probably due to the wind and cold, it was tucked into an Eastern redcedar tree behind the cows.  There is at least one Northern Mockingbird in the area, so watch out for ID confusion.  Also, be sure to look closely at the barbed wire fence surrounding the cow pasture for examples of the grubs that the shrike is eating, and impaling onto the barbs.

From West Union, take SR 125 east about 2 miles.  Turn right onto Poplar Ridge. At the T intersection, go left, staying on Poplar Ridge. At the next T, turn left again onto Malone, and keep going left to stay with Malone. Just after you pass under some transmission lines, there is an abandoned house on your left.  The cow pasture, manure pile, preferred wires, and cedar trees are just beyond the house.

Kathi Hutton,
Clermont County
