The reserve had a light patchy frost this morning. There weren’t a lot of birds but it was still a pleasant walk. Pretty much the same story as far as sparrows with the majority being White-throated with a few Field, Song and Swamp. I’m still hearing a few towhees. I also heard a Ruby-crowned Kinglet in full song which was lovely. Pair of wood ducks.
I went to Blendon Woods mostly to enjoy the fall colors which were nearing their golden peak. Again, quiet bird-wise but there was a large flock of Common Grackles, probably 150 or more, making quite a racket. They would fly around as a large mob and then descend upon the tops of beech trees where they would busy themselves eating the beech nuts. It was pretty cool as the husks were dropping like rain. A very interesting birding experience, not one I’ve witnessed before.
There were a few pairs of wood ducks on the pond.
