I was out for an evening walk on the bike path in Granville tonight when I spotted maybe 6 chimney swifts flying quite high. I watched them to see if there were any others and if they seemed to be headed to a roost. I haven’t found any good chimneys here in Granville yet & have not seen any large groups.

As I was scanning the swifts, a single Com Nighthawk flew through my view. If I hadn’t been looking at the swifts, I might have missed it—it was almost as high as the swifts. I rarely see them here which is a bummer but fall is usually when I see one. I grew up in S IN and every summer night, the nighthawks were all over the sky and I’d watch and listen to their beeps and that whirring sound they make when they dive. So sad the numbers have crashed for this species and all the others.
