I visited Derby Lakes today in hopes of seeing the White-fronted Geese but did not see them. I was treated to two N Harriers hunting near the pond that is still open including a beautiful male/gray ghost. The other was an immature. Lovely in the light snow against the winter landscape.

There were good numbers of Redhead Ducks as well as a few Ring-necked & mallards. Also spotted one Green-winged Teal. The only geese I saw were Canada geese. I scanned for a Cackling but the northwest wind was pretty sharp and I did not spend that much time scanning. Nothin unusual at the feeder there—mostly cardinals and White-throated Sparrows.

Earlier in the day I was entertained by a pair of Pileated WPs in my yard. They seemed like they were checking out possible nest holes? One stayed quite awhile on one tree, hammering away at one spot. The other eventually landed on my small suet feeder, sending the other birds scattering. Amazing to see such a large bird clinging to the small suet cage, as it helped itself to chunks of suet.

Denison was pretty quiet. I had a couple flocks of cedar wax wings and heard a towhee. One drake mallard at the one pond with a small area of open water. Heard bluebirds. Small groups of robins.
