*SEPTEMBER 01, 2018 - CUYAHOGA VALLEY MONTHLY TOWPATH TRAIL CENSUS.*
*ROUTE*: Towpath Trail from Red Lock Trailhead south to Merriman Valley
with stops at Trail Mix in Peninsula and Szalay's Sweet Corn Farm.
*TIME*: 6:55am - 4:15pm  *TEMP.*: 61F ~ 86F  *COND.*: Sunny to mostly
sunny, hot and humid with light southern breezes.
*TRAIL COND.*: Ideal - all bridges open to travel, although first bridge
south of Deep Lock is not complete - just steel plates over creek.
*RIVER COND.*: Normal to slightly above normal.  *FT.MI.*: 13.63  *OBS.*:
John Henry and Douglas W. Vogus.

*I. MAMMALS*: 3 SPECIES.

   1. Eastern Cottontail - 1
   2. Eastern Chipmunk - 19
   3. Red Squirrel - 15


*II. BIRDS*: 56 SPECIES, 722 TOTAL BIRDS, 1 SPECIES NEW TO CENSUS.
*(NOTE: m = male; f = female; ? = bird was seen but not sexed; * = bird was
heard calling but not sexed)*

   2. Wood Duck - 18 (5m,9f,4?)
   3. Wild Turkey - 5 (1m,4f)  (all immatures and First September Record on
   Census)

   1. American Toad - 1 (heard)
   2. Northern Spring Peeper - 6 (heard)
   3. Gray Treefrog - 3 (heard)
   4. Bullfrog - 5
   5. Green Frog - 4


*V. FISHES*: 7 SPECIES, 1 SPECIES NEW TO CENSUS.

   1. Central Mudminnow - 2  (in Deep Lock - First September Record on
   Census)
   2. Creek Chub - 215+
   3. Northern Hog Sucker - 8  (in Cuyahoga River at Peninsula - New Census
   High - previous was 6 on 08/2016)
   4. Channel Catfish - 2  (2 three-inch young landlocked in a small pool
   in creek south of Peninsula - New Fish Species on Census - now at 19
   Species since 01/2010)
   5. Largemouth Bass - 1  (about 5-inches long landlocked with the catfish)
   6. Bluegill - 5
   7. Pumpkinseed - 7


*VI. BUTTERFLIES*: 10 SPECIES, 1 SPECIES NEW TO CENSUS.

   1. Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - 2
   2. Cabbage Butterfly - 32
   3. Clouded Sulphur - 4  (Tied Census High from 10/2017)
   4. Eastern Tailed-Blue - 1  (Tied Census High from 07/2018 & 08/2018)
   5. Summer Azure - 4
   6. Pearl Crescent - 12  (New Census High - previous was 9 on 07/2016)
   7. Viceroy - 4  (New Census High - previous was 2 on 07/2010 & 08/2013)
   8. Monarch - 3
   9. Least Skipper - 2  (Tied Census High from 06/2012)
   10. Northern Broken-Dash - 1  (New Butterfly Species on Census - now at
   31 Species since 01/2010)
