There were a few places around Alum Crk Rob Thorn mentioned in his post the other day that I wasn’t familiar with so I thought I’d check them out today especially since it was too nice a day to spend indoors.

At New Galena, there was a big raft of Coots which was closer to the Alum Beach area. Prob close to 80 birds, maybe more as they were packed in close. A few N Pintail were in front of them.

I’d hoped to see the Surf Scoter Rob mentioned at the Summer Ridge access area, one of the places I’d not known of. Ducks were distant and not plentiful—no scoter but I did have scope views of Com Goldeneye & Buffleheads displaying which was great. Just wish they’d been closer for photo opps. A few Mallards but no Mergansers. Saw a nice YR Warbler there as well.

At Berlin St Rd, where I had been before, I picked up Am Wigeon, new for the year, hanging out with some Redhead & another Coot. The light was terrible so I might have missed something.

I ambled N but never found large groups of waterfowl and v few passerines. Saw one v distant Canvasback, some Scaup sp and a lone Herring Gull at one of the stops. Lots of small groups of Ring-billed Gulls at most places. Small groups of Canada Geese w/some territorial squabbling going on. Crows. Only WPs were Downy & Red-bellied.

No eagles, just Red-taileds & a couple roadside kestrels incl one hovering over the median of Rt 161. A few TVs.

Gorgeous day! Nice to know of some new spots in that area to check periodically. Thx, Rob!
