When I arrived around 11am, nobody I ran into had seen the bird yet. It’s been seen mostly between Redwood Drive and the bridge along the path that runs parallel to the creek (Gable) although I parked at the Sunset Park entrance and walked in from there turning left at the bridge. More than an hour went by with numerous non-birder folks asking birders if they had seen the bird. The locals are quite familiar with the bird and were showing off their iPhone photos as well as sharing where they have seen it.

Then a fellow walking his dog flagged down a couple birders ahead of me to tell them that the Limpkin was perched in the tree on Redwood Drive right by the bridge so a number of us hurried over to find the bird perched about eye level in a tree seemingly oblivious to lawnmowers, children on bicycles, people walking dogs and birders with cameras and binoculars. At first it was holding a large snail in its bill then it moved around a little, hiding in some leaves and when it came back out in the open, it no longer had the snail. Interesting.

Very cool bird. Thanks to all the birders, and the locals for that matter, for helping us out. I was not aware of this park previously and it’s very pleasant walking (although it has no restrooms).

I’ve then tried for the Heerman’s Gull at Euclid beach but no luck, only Ring-billed & Herring. I had spoken to a birder at the Limpkin site who had been there in the morning looking for it and She had not seen it this morning either. A big party was going on when I was there w/lots of boomboxes.

Long day but worth it. Smoke was pretty bad. Limpkin is an ABA and Ohio bird for me – I’d seen it previously in Honduras but several years ago.
