Fellow birders,

This afternoon, at our Perry County cookout, a ovenbird showed up on and off for over four hours. It was twice seen perched in trees next to the patio, and several times on the ground. I’ve had cookouts here for over 40 years, and have had a lot of birds drop in, but never an ovenbird. There are multiple feeders and suet cakes, but I’ve never known an ovenbird to visit a feeder. This house is definitely in the woods, and ovenbirds actually nest here, only about 200 yards away, but I’ve never seen them this close to the house. If anyone has an opinion about this, 8 would love to hear it.
Speaking of birds, this was the last day of September (you knew that), so we made an effort to add to our already extensive yard list for the month. At over 70 already, we didn’t expect much more, but hit the jackpot with 8 additional species for me and 9 for Vicki Derr. An amazing day Red breasted nuthatch, white throated sparrow, sapsucker, gray cheeked thrush, yellow rumpled warbler, blue headed vireo, and more. Needless to say, a very nice birding day. And, as I’ve said before, this is a very nice yard.
