Hey all -
Yesterday, Ray Hannikmann suggested that a jaeger
flight was taking place, and after watching the lake
today from Lorain and Huron, I would tend to agree.
At least five total jaegers were seen, including three
(2 Parasitic, 1 Pomarine) flying together at the mouth
of Lorain Harbor and another Parasitic and one better
left at jaeger sp. at Huron Harbor. At Huron, a
rufousy juvenile intermediate Parasitic appeared
suddenly overhead and turned several fairly lazy
circles, before taking off and dive-bombing the
harbor...the best looks hands-down I've ever had of
one. I managed one crappy picture.
Overall, a fabulous day to be on the lake, where the
species list definitely didn't match the weather.
Other highlights included a PURPLE SANDPIPER at
Lorain, which flew in and appeared to land along the
breakwall, and a Franklin's and five Lesser
Black-backed Gulls in the throng at Huron.
Good birding -
