Greetings!
Good numbers of gulls and waterfowl are starting to congregate on Clear Fork Reservoir (SW of Mansfield) Richland County.
Being one of the highest locations in the state, it attracts incredible numbers of gulls, which gather each evening (late fall through early spring, but especially in the winter) at the southern end of the lake, above the dam.
Clear Fork also hosts one of the largest wintering populations of Lesser Black-backed Gulls in the state. As the cold season lengthens, it's not unusual to find 10-15 birds, or more, among the gulls each evening.
Last evening (11/20/18), a quick look produced 2 adults and 1 first-winter bird. This evening (11/21/18), Amanda Cicila and I found 3 adults and 1 first-winter bird.
The best location for viewing the birds is the small yacht club, on the south west end of the lake, along SR 97. Park along the road, right near the gate and walk in. Please do not park in the drive and block the gate!
This is one of the easiest and most consistent places to get Lesser Black-backed Gulls in Ohio.
