I didn’t want to be inside on a day that seemed more like a spring day than a day in mid-January and it was a nice day to try to increase my rather pitiful Jan list. I started in the Grove city area. Many thanks to Robert Thorn for posting directions to the various ponds in the area. The first pond, I guess the one people are calling Hoover Pond, only had Canada geese, mallards and some shovelers. Saw an imm Red-tailed Hawk at the playing fields parking area near the pond.

I had better luck at the Holton Run pond where I found 4 Cackling Geese with the much more numerous Canadas. I almost missed them initially because they were snoozing with their heads tucked on the bank behind a bush but when a Mallard walked by them, I realized how small they were and shortly after that they got back into the water for better viewing. I also picked up two Snow Geese, one adult and one imm that was light gray. There was one Redhead there plus a kingfisher.

Nothing new at the other ponds by the retirement village or YMCA.

I swung by the ponds near the Amazon warehouse in obetz picking up 3 Ring-necked Ducks. O/w, just Canada Geese & a few mallards.

I then headed over to Walnut Woods Tall Pines area to check out the feeders. I figured I might have a chance to add a few more species there. Nothing unusual but I did pick up some more January birds for me: a lovely Fox Sparrow, Wild Turkey, RB Nuthatch. Saw a nice male E Towhee which I’d only heard at Blendon. One of the White-throated Sparrows had v bright plumage as if spring was alr here.

At Blendon Woods, I only added Gadwall. A “herd” of turkeys, about 20, were on the path near the blinds. Black Ducks, mallards & Hoodies.
