I enjoyed a pleasant afternoon at killdeer today. One of the few times I’ve been there and not been freezing cold. I wanted to enjoy the big numbers of Tundra Swans—just listening to them is marvelous. Fair number of Trumpeter Swans adding their calls and a few Sandhill Cranes (at least 3) as well! Wonderful. A Mute Swan was alr on a nest…as were several Canada Geese.
Good duck numbers but not v close & ones that were were v skittish, flying out as soon as they saw me. Many ponds had no waterfowl. I did pick up my FOY GW Teal as well as Red-headed Woodpecker.
I also had another close encounter with a curious mink. It popped its head out its den to look me over w/those beady eyes before deciding it was best to stay hidden. V cool.
Raptors
Bald Eagles—hard to get good counts as I was driving the same Roads at times but at least 5 adults (including 2 on a nest) and 3 imm.
Red-taileds
N Harriers 2
Kestrels at least 4
Ducks
GW Teal
N Shoveler
N Pintail
Mallard
Gadwall
Am Wigeon
Couple flocks of Tree Sparrows
Song Sparrow
N Flicker
Red-winged BBs
Killdeer—one flyover then I saw 4-5 on a flooded field.
