The Red Knot originally found by Bob Lane on 9/4 continues this morning, Thursday 9/6. Shorebirds are east of the Rt 225 bridge and best seen either from the new marina on German Church Rd. just east of Rt 225 or parking on one of the gravel pull-offs along Lowe Road just east of Rt 225 and walking 100 yards north to the mudflats. High counts the last 2 days include:
2 American Golden-Plover7 Semipalmated Plover221 Killdeer1 Red Knot (the 30th shorebird species identified here in the last 20 years)2 Stilt Sanpiper9 Baird's Sandpiper36 Least Sandpiper59 Pectoral Sandpiper33 Semipalmated Sandpiper2 Short-billed Dowitcher1 Wilson's Snipe1 Wilson's Phalarope2 Spotted Sandpiper6 Solitary Sandpiper9 Greater Yellowlegs22 Lesser Yellowlegs
The habitat is obviously as good as it has been in years. Buff-breasted Sandpipers and other special birds will almost surely be found in the coming days.
