After running into the madhouse & crowds at Dillon State Park for the regatta which nixed looking for the piping plover, I headed back home stopping at Blackhand Gorge. I decided to just hike the Marie Hickey Trail and found a few nice birds, mostly heard.
I was greeted by a family of American Redstarts and the youngsters were quite vocal and flitting about—perhaps I was one of the first humans they’d seen. After a bit of a commotion, it seemed like an adult female herded them away from the path’s edge.
Later I saw a young Kentucky Warbler also chipping at me and perching several places to check me out. I heard a couple others farther from the trail at different spots. Then, on the way out, I encountered a family of noisy Blue-gray Gnatcatchers. Other than that, it was fairly quiet but a beautiful morning for a walk.
