Great day today:

Upland Sandpipers- We had seven pairs this year, the birds arrived nearly a
week earlier than normal. This showed in that we had 5 birds today (three
visual, 2 sound)and two of the birds were fully volant hatch year birds.
Assuming 28 days to fly and 28 days to incubate, this puts the nesting date
around April 22, 15 days after they arrived on territory. Today they mowed
the hay between Industry Parkway and the Airport, the birds can be seen
walking in the hay field by driving between the blue buildings on the east
end of Industry Parkway and parking near the dirt mound. Scan the area
closely, they are remarkably easy to miss. You can walk in the fields in
this area.

Swamp/Marsh birds- I started my day with counter calling Virginia Rails. In
the last ten days I have also seen Moorhen, Snipe and heard Sora. The snipe
was located in a sedge meadow where we had counts of up to 35 during
migration. Apparently, at least one stayed. All of the species are unusual
June records in unglaciated Ohio.

I finished my day with a grouse and three chicks a couple of hundred yards
from my driveway.

Scott Pendleton, Cadiz
